THE INTENSE PAIN THROBBING through his head and the aches screaming through his muscles made Cory wish he had died in that explosion.

He groaned and opened his eyes. Thank goodness, Taylor had left the curtains closed in the bedroom because he was sure the sunlight would be an added complication right now. She stood beside the bed as she wrapped gauze around his head.

Her lilac scent drifted around him. Soothed him. Comforted him completely. If he weren’t in so much pain, he would be enjoying her nearness right at this very moment. He groaned under his breath. Why did he have to be injured right now?

Cory’s shirt had been removed, and his chest and wounds had been washed and covered with gauze. She had taken gentle care to make sure he would heal quickly.

The woman he’d remembered loving in Bermuda had returned. Something he didn’t think would ever happen. Yet, her tender words of encouragement still whispered through his head. Heaven only knows how he’d heard every word she’d said when she thought he was dead.

His heart soared. She’d actually confessed she wanted to be held by him, with no secrets between them. But why? Did she want to admit her treachery before he died? For some reason, he didn’t believe that. Not now, when she looked on him with so much tenderness in her sapphire eyes that it made him want to weep with happiness.

Maybe his head injury made him feel this way, or it was the near death experience. But at this very second he wanted to forgive her for everything and act like nothing bad had happened between them five years ago.

Yet he couldn’t. His FBI training had him wanting to discover the truth... no matter what the consequences.

“Hi.” She smiled.

“Hi.” His voice cracked, so she helped him drink a glass of water.

After setting the glass on the bedside table, Taylor stroked his cheeks. “Are you feeling better now?”

He tried to smile, but the effort hurt his face. “A little. Not much. Still feels like I was inside the boat when it exploded.”

She frowned. “Cory, that scared me to death. Do you know what happened and why the boat blew up?”

“No. I can’t figure it out. The motor sounded just fine when we took it out on the lake. Even when I brought it back and shut it off.”

“You don’t think... that maybe...”

“The stalker?”

She nodded.

“It’s a possibility. But if we consider that, we’ll have to consider he’s nearby watching every move we make.” He squeezed his eyes closed, willing the pounding in his head to disappear so he could think straight.

After several deep, cleansing breaths, he looked at her again. “If the stalker is here, I can’t be lying down right now.” He struggled to rise, but she placed her hands on his shoulders and held him in bed.

“Cory, you must take it easy and rest so your head will heal.”

He gripped the sheets beneath him. “Not if the stalker is nearby.”

“He’s not. I’m sure the explosion was due to something mechanical.
